Spotlight on Mecoco

Posted: 01 February 2024, in Member Spotlight-News

We’re delighted to be joined by Mecoco in our latest member spotlight. Mecoco is a social enterprise in North Ayrshire, owned by Sense Scotland. We spoke to Gabriel Robinson, Digital Content and Engagement Officer, to find out more about what they do, their plans for the year ahead and top tips for other social enterprises.

What does your social enterprise do?

Mecoco, which stands for MEaningful COntribution to the COmmunity is a social enterprise which creates quality candles, wax melts and home fragrances, and which employs a mix of people with complex health needs, individuals with learning disabilities, and those who are retired but want to stay busy.

How do you do it?

Products are made at Mecoco’s workshop in Dalry, North Ayrshire. The product-making process is broken down into very small steps, meaning all colleagues are able to get involved with as much support as they need, such as hand-over-hand support, verbal guidance, and adapted equipment.

Why should someone buy/use your product/services? What are the benefits and what makes your organisation unique?

Mecoco is unique in that it offers opportunities for individuals with learning disabilities and complex needs who face barriers to paid work. Customers can purchase products from Mecoco knowing not only that the items will be of the highest quality but also that they are supporting employment opportunities for people with disabilities.

What’s your personal motivation?

Since 2023, Mecoco has been part of the Sense Scotland family, a Scottish charity and specialised social care provider. Like Mecoco, Sense Scotland believes in and works towards an inclusive and accessible society where everyone lives their best life – something which Mecoco aims to make a reality.

What is the current focus for your social enterprise?

The current focus for Mecoco is to sell more products and build brand awareness, bringing the story and values of Mecoco to a wider audience.

What exciting things do you have coming up?

We will shortly be refreshing our website to improve the customer shopping experience. We will also be launching a programme of seasonal products, events and discounts to engage with our existing customers and reach new customers.

Who do you want to work with more?

We would love to work with retailers that share our ethos such as charities, other social enterprises and companies that value equality and diversity. Over the next 12 months we are also keen to expand our work producing branded, quality, ethical products for corporate gifting.

What’s your biggest challenge?

Currently, we hold a waiting list of individuals that would like to come and work in our workshops. In order to offer more workshop opportunities, we need to increase the number of retailers selling our products.

Where do you see your organisation in 5 years?

In the next five years, we hope to take on more inclusive colleagues, providing more opportunities for more people. If there is sufficient demand, we plan to open another Mecoco site, allowing even more individuals to benefit.

What top tips would you give to other social enterprises?

Our biggest tip is to maximise every opportunity to raise your profile.  We recently featured in the Lifestyle Motability magazine and this had a huge impact for us.  As well as a large number of orders from new customers, we received lots of enquiries from people keen to be part of our inclusive team.
