Taking the Dis out of Disability in Film and TV training

Ability Post Production Academy is a social enterprise based in Johnstone, Renfrewshire, founded in 2019 by Film Editor & Certified AVID trainer, Nigel G Honey.
At Ability our motto is “Taking the Dis” out of Disability in Film and TV training and all of our training focusses on a student’s natural abilities rather than their disability. We have taught students all over the world with Autism and both visible and invisible disabilities and they are some of our best editing students. We give the students plenty of time to practice their skills, give notes and record sessions for review. I have an invisible disability myself, Bipolar 2, and as a young person I was told I wouldn’t work in TV and Film as an Editor because of it. Our vision at Ability Post Production Academy is to increase opportunities for people with disabilities to pursue careers in the creative industries
At Ability we keep classes small with a maximum of ten students per class. This means that we are able to provide plenty of hands on and one-to-one training. Unlike many colleges, our trainers are not just teachers but are leading Film and TV industry professionals, with over 25 years of experience in post-production and editing credits including Aberdeen, BAFTA, Berlin, Bordeaux, Cannes, Raindance and Edinburgh International Film Festivals.
We are also the first Online Video and Film Editing Academy, providing affordable, inclusive and accessible courses that are delivered live online with an experienced tutor. This means that we are able to connect with students around the world and have taught classes across the UK, Europe, Asia and the USA and have had the pleasure of teaching at XJTLU University in China.
We also deliver online training and in-person classes to a range of Corporate and third-sector clients such as AVID, the BBC, Grierson Trust, Mama Youth Project, Maverick Prods, NFTS, Northern Film School, the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, RBS and TX Maxx. Working with these organisations means that we are able to re-invest any profits back into the academy to keep our classes affordable and accessible.
We received funding from Screen Skills and were delighted to deliver the UK’s 1st AVID for Edit Producers course in collaboration with Jo Woolf and Clear Cut Pictures, one of the UK’s most important post production houses. The course introduced students to the AVID interface, audio mixing and recording voice-overs. We are now the Only Online Avid Certified Learning Partner in Scotland able to deliver both the Media Composer 101 and 110 Courses 2020/2021 and Premiere 2020/2021/2022 Courses Online and later in 2022 Resolve 17 Editing and Colour Grading courses. We also deliver bespoke Training and Solutions. Visit our website to find out more about the courses we offer.
