On March 14th-15th, a Community Learning Exchange was held in partnership between Social Enterprise Scotland and the Rural Social Enterprise Hub. The event provided a unique opportunity for attendees to visit Tarbert Harbour Authority (THA) and the Isle of Gigha Heritage Trust (IGHT) – two leading rural organisations with extensive experience in community wealth building.

The exchange began with a guided tour of Tarbert Harbour, showcasing its amenities and community-driven initiatives. Established by an Act of Parliament in 1912, Tarbert Harbour Authority (THA) operates as a Trust Port, working closely with the local community to support events and enhance leisure facilities. Through strategic improvements, THA continues to provide long-term benefits to its stakeholders and strengthen the area’s economic and social fabric.

On the second day, participants travelled to the Isle of Gigha to take part in the island’s Gigha Day celebrations. This annual event, held on March 15th, marks the historic moment in 2002 when the island’s residents successfully purchased Gigha for £4 million, transitioning it into community ownership.

The visit included:

  • The island’s flag-raising ceremony, a tradition that symbolizes community ownership and resilience.
  • A tour of new housing developments, showcasing efforts to address local housing needs.
  • A visit to the newly refurbished Gigha Hotel, where attendees enjoyed refreshments and networking opportunities.

The Isle of Gigha Heritage Trust, which manages the island’s development, was recently recognised as ‘Social Enterprise of the Year’ at the Scottish Social Enterprise Awards 2024, further highlighting its impact and success in community-led regeneration.

This two-day learning exchange provided a valuable platform for knowledge sharing, inspiring collaboration, and showcasing the power of community-led social enterprises in driving sustainable rural development.
