Social Enterprise Scotland visits 10 Downing Street

Until this week, I’d never stepped foot in 10 Downing Street, and it was a genuine privilege to be invited, by the Prime Minister, to a Burns Supper. The experience was more than just a visit—it was an opportunity to reflect on the significance of civic society and the collective impact we strive to achieve.
The street outside No. 10 felt almost cinematic, perhaps naively I thought Downing Street was a ‘street’ however once you pass through security, it opens into a quiet cul-de-sac, eerily quiet for being in the centre of London.
Inside, the building’s history is palpable. From the sweeping staircase lined with portraits of past Prime Ministers to meeting Larry the Cat who greeted me in the lobby – a charming reminder of the uniquely British character of the place.
Yet, for all the grandeur of the surroundings, the real highlight was connecting with other leaders from across civic society and Scottish business. It was a privilege to share ideas, exchange experiences, and reaffirm the vital role social enterprises and civic organisations play in shaping policy and improving lives. Visits like this are a reminder that collaboration and dialogue are essential to progress.
I’m grateful to have been part of the conversation and will continue championing the work of civic society and the social enterprise movement as we strive for a stronger, fairer future.
