Spotlight on Amma Birth Companions

What does your social enterprise do?

Amma supports mostly migrant women in Glasgow through pregnancy, birth, and early parenthood. We work to improve perinatal experiences and outcomes for people facing inequalities, so that everyone—regardless of their background or circumstances—has access to compassionate, culturally safe support.

How do you do it (client group, practical daily work, customers etc)?

Through our staff and volunteer team, we provide 1-1 companionship, support and advocacy during pregnancy, birth and postnatally. We also offer antenatal education and we run a peer support programme for mothers and babies. We also work with the NHS and policy makers to influence and address maternity care disparities.

Why should someone buy/use your product/services? What are the benefits and what makes your organisation unique?

To support our work, we sell a range of products, including limited-edition hoodies and tote bags featuring our exclusive Alice Dansey-Wright ‘Like Family’ artwork. We also sell hand-blended herbal gift packs, notebooks, pens, and t-shirts. By shopping with us you become part of our community, supporting families who need it most.

What’s your personal motivation?

I believe no one should navigate pregnancy, birth, or early parenthood alone. Many people that we support face systemic barriers, and seeing the difference Amma makes in their lives drives me every day. Our work is about dignity, care, and ensuring everyone receives the support they need.

What is the current focus for your social enterprise?

We’re currently focussed on strengthening and expanding our services to meet growing demand, engaging people with lived expertise in all areas of our work, building on our strategic advocacy work to address maternal health disparities, and increasing our sustainability through diverse funding streams.

What exciting things do you have coming up?

We are exploring expansion to new client groups in Glasgow. We’re also building on our advocacy work to influence national maternity policies and practices. We’re exploring developing training for healthcare professionals and student midwives. We are also working on collaborating more with UK wide organisations, to increase our impact.

Who do you want to work with more?

We want to collaborate more with healthcare staff and senior leaders, policymakers, and other third sector organisations – particularly those focussed on birth, health, families, migrant rights and social justice. Strong partnerships will help us drive systemic change and improve maternity experiences and outcomes for people.

What’s your biggest challenge?

Sustaining and growing our work in an uncertain funding landscape is a key challenge. Demand for our services is increasing, so securing the necessary resources and strengthening our organisation, whilst staying true to our values and looking after our staff and volunteers is crucial.

Where do you see your organisation in 5 years?

We want to be providing support to many more mothers and families. We know we can’t do this alone, so we’ll be collaborating more with other organisations.

We also want to be a leader in addressing perinatal health and care disparities, by positively influencing policy and practice across Scotland.

What top tips would you give to other social enterprises?

Organisational culture is really important to us at Amma – I think it’s important to look after your people and also to involve people with lived expertise in all areas of your work.

I also think it’s important to stay true to your mission, build strong relationships, diversify funding, and embrace change.
