Spotlight on British Nordic Walking
In our newest spotlight, we’re happy to be joined by Catherine Hughes, CEO of British Nordic Walking. British Nordic Walking works to promote, develop and safeguard the principles, education and characteristics of Nordic Walking worldwide.
What does your social enterprise do?
We train Nordic Walking instructors, help them establish community groups, and promote Nordic Walking as an inclusive activity for all fitness levels, benefiting physical and mental health.
How do you do it?
We train instructors in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, provide ongoing support, and connect them with general and specialist groups, including those for Parkinson’s, amputees, and breast cancer survivors.
Why should someone buy/use your product/services? What are the benefits and what makes your organisation unique?
Nordic Walking boosts fitness, reduces social isolation, and is accessible to all abilities. We uniquely combine instructor training with long-term support and community-focused outreach.
What is your personal motivation?
I’m passionate about helping people lead healthier, more active lives and creating inclusive opportunities for physical activity, regardless of fitness levels or conditions. ‘Exercise is Medicine’ and ‘Motion is Lotion’ are a couple of my favourite phrases.
What is the current focus for your social enterprise?
Expanding instructor training in Scotland, increasing Nordic Walking’s profile, and reaching underserved communities with tailored programs.
What exciting things do you have coming up?
We are celebrating INWA’s 25th anniversary in 2025. INWA – the International Nordic Walking Federation, sets the standards for Nordic Walking technique and training. There are 20 member countries in Europe, Asia and America working together to develop the activity.
Who do you want to work with more?
Healthcare professionals, social prescribers, community leaders, and organisations supporting diverse groups like veterans and career changers.
What’s your biggest challenge?
Raising awareness of Nordic Walking’s versatility and securing funding for community programs.
Where do you see your organisation in 5 years?
A larger network of instructors in Scotland, more community groups, and Nordic Walking widely recognised for its health benefits.
What top tips would you give to other social enterprises?
Focus on your mission, build strong partnerships, and share success stories to inspire and attract support.
