Spotlight on The Cyber and Fraud Centre

Posted: 11 February 2025, in Member Spotlight

In our newest spotlight, we’re happy to be joined by John Callagy, Head of Strategy at The Cyber and Fraud Centre – Scotland. The Cyber and Fraud Centre provides a range of cyber services, training and advice. They reinvest in the cyber community, ensuring that every business, charity, membership body or social housing organisation has access to the resources they need to stay secure.

What does your social enterprise do?

The Cyber and Fraud Centre – Scotland is a social enterprise dedicated to improving cyber and fraud resilience across Scotland. We offer a range of services, training, and advice to protect organisations from cyber and fraud threats. Our mission is to ensure that every business and charity, regardless of size or structure, has access to the services and resources needed to stay secure.

How do you do it?

The Centre combines expertise with a socially driven mission to deliver support built on trust and collaboration. We offer services such as vulnerability assessments, penetration testing, and phishing resilience exercises and reinvest in the cyber community and beyond, including our charity, the Cyber and Fraud Hub, which focuses on supporting individual victims of cyber and fraud crime. Our Cyber Skills Academy provides tailored education to enhance cyber resilience across all workforce levels.

Why should someone buy/use your product/services? What are the benefits and what makes your organisation unique?

As a social enterprise, the Centre reinvests profits into the community, ensuring accessible and affordable cyber security resources for all. (You can find the Centre’s latest statement on becoming a social enterprise on their website, or by clicking here). Our commitment to creating a safer digital future, combined with a comprehensive range of services and training, sets us apart. Our focus on cost effectiveness, transparency, and societal impact makes us a reliable and unique partner in cyber security.

What is your personal motivation?

Organisations shouldn’t be prevented from accessing cyber and fraud information due to a lack of knowledge and understanding. It is these organisations in particular who will benefit most from resources and services, and so we have taken it upon ourselves to deliver this.

What is the current focus for your social enterprise?

The current focus is on promoting our Cyber MoT, a rapid, 25-question assessment designed to evaluate your organisation’s current cybersecurity posture, expanding our Cyber Skills Academy, and supporting victims of cyber and fraud through our free Incident Response helpline.

What exciting things do you have coming up?

The Centre has several exciting events scheduled, including “Cyber Nytes: Business Email Compromise” on 30 January 2025, and the “Cyber Executive Education Programme – Glasgow 2025” on 20 February 2025. These initiatives aim to equip organisations with the knowledge and skills needed to tackle evolving cyber threats. To find more information about these events, click here.

Who do you want to work with more?

Those keen to make a difference to society and who also want to challenge themselves by becoming better protected from cyber and fraud crime.

What’s your biggest challenge?

Reducing the fear and apprehension that many organisations have preventing them from engaging with cyber security.

Where do you see your organisation in 5 years?

In five years, the Centre envisions becoming the leading provider of cyber security services and training in Scotland. We aim to build a robust, interconnected community of organisations that prioritise cyber resilience, while continuing to reinvest in and strengthen Scotland’s cyber ecosystem.

What top tips would you give to other social enterprises?

  • Focus on your mission while ensuring sustainability by reinvesting profits wisely.
  • Build strong relationships with partners and the communities you serve.
  • Emphasise the societal impact of your work to inspire trust and support.
