Spotlight on Weans’ Scran & Kitchin CIC
In our latest member spotlight, we’re thrilled to be joined by Annette Fisher, Founder and Director of Weans’ Scran & Kitchin CIC. Based in Glasgow, Weans’ Scran & Kitchen offers young people the opportunity to learn how to prepare healthy meals from scratch.
What does your social enterprise do, and why do you do it?
We are a cooking school based in Glasgow Southside. We teach children and adults how to cook delicious, healthy meals from scratch. All our profits go to providing free classes to care-experienced young people and free open cook sessions to refugee families.
What products, services and/or experiences do you currently offer?
- Cooking classes for children aged 7-16 years
- Adult Master Classes with top Glasgow and Edinburgh chefs
- Free classes to care-experienced young people
- Free open cook sessions for refugee families
What’s your personal motivation?
I am passionate about introducing new foods and new flavours to children and getting them excited about preparing healthy meals. I am also passionate about providing extra-curricular activities to care-experienced children who often miss out on these opportunities.
What is next on the horizon for your social enterprise, and how do you plan to get there?
We have just opened our new premises in Glasgow Southside, and we want to use this to generate lots of income to provide our free classes and open cook sessions.
What’s the hardest thing you’ve had to overcome in your social enterprise journey?
Learning how to use social media to market our classes and physically setting up our new premises, which we did completely on our own as a way to keep costs down.
What is your most satisfying achievement so far?
Working with a young autistic girl who had a strong aversion to all green foods and watching her eat a whole basil plant and make and eat a dish involving peas. It was incredible to watch the creativity of cooking help her overcome her fears.
How has being a member of Social Enterprise Scotland helped you?
Through networking and advice when setting up as a CIC, and through suggestions of funding organisations.
Who in the social enterprise community inspires you and why?
Proud Futures and MILK are both amazing local social enterprises that have been really supportive to us in our journey. They are both such fantastic inspirations for what’s possible in the SE space.
What top tips would you give to other social enterprises?
Being a social enterprise is so much more fulfilling than being a regular private business; being part of such a diverse group of organisations in Scotland makes all the hard work worthwhile.
