Social Enterprise Scotland, the national body that represents the diverse range of social enterprises across Scotland, has commented on the closure of Creative Scotland’s Open Fund for Individuals.
Kim Wallace, Deputy CEO said: “There has been a great deal of discussion since Creative Scotland announced the closure of the Open Fund for Individuals. These developments have sparked a wave of support for the arts and culture sector. In a nation as creative and entrepreneurial as Scotland, there is an understanding of the vital role that creativity and the arts play in enriching our society. The broad support from our community is evident, and the value of the arts and creative industries should not need continuous justification.
“According to the 2021 Social Enterprise Census, there are 839 Arts and Creative Industries organisations in Scotland, making it the second-largest sector represented in the census. This situation is regrettable – it reflects poorly on a nation known for its cultural heritage and creative spirit.
“Creative Scotland should function as a facilitator of support for artists and creatives. The current trajectory is concerning, and without a significant shift in approach, the outcome will likely be detrimental to Scotland’s cultural landscape.
“We urge Creative Scotland to rise to the challenge and fulfil its role as a champion of the arts.”
