Top Tips for Entering this year’s Social Enterprise Awards Scotland

Posted: 07 June 2024, in Awards

Success in our Awards is looked at differently by everyone taking part. Some view the learnings achieved as part of their Award entry and overall process as a win, while others define it as winning their Category Award. Some simply want to be shortlisted for networking, rewarding staff or even talent spotting! Whatever your reason for applying we thought it would be helpful to provide you with some hints and tips to ensure the entry process is as efficient and effective as possible and your entry is as good as it can be.

Benefits:

In terms of the benefits for entering, the list is long. It includes:

  • All shortlisted applicants will be invited to the Social Enterprise Awards Scotland 2024 in Edinburgh at the Scottish Parliament
  • Category 1-7 winners will automatically advance to the Social Enterprise UK 2024 Awards in London
  • Winners will receive media coverage to build awareness and recognition
  • Winners can join the 2025 Awards judging panel
  • The Awards provide exceptional networking and profile-raising opportunities
  • All winners will feature in the ‘Awards Hall of Fame’

Top Tips

  • Concentrate on the criteria
We have a set of general criteria which apply to all categories as well as specific criteria for individual categories. Read the question and answer it thoroughly (keeping to the word count please!). The judges will be reviewing this. The more evidence you provide against the criteria then the stronger your application will be. Please try to explain your story – and prove it!
  • Include supporting documents
Applicants can upload 2 supporting documents, up to 10 pages each. Previous applicants have included social impact reports, annual reports, summary of service user feedback etc. Some have even gone the extra mile to produce a bespoke document using multiple sources. Think about how you can showcase your organisation by finding the brilliant examples, metrics and social impact.
  • Apply for multiple categories
Why not look at the criteria and apply for more than one award? Remember, we have 3 questions that relate to all award categories and so you can copy/tweak your answer over. For instance, some organisations who have applied for the Environmental Award also adapted their applications for the Social Enterprise of the year Award. And, as well as an organisational application, we also have two individual categories so please nominate a staff or volunteer member who deserves recognition.
  • Start early
Don’t underestimate the time this will take. While the application form is slimmed down and shorter than many other Awards programmes, it will still take thought and effort. The judges will be looking for this. Make sure you stand out so take your time and begin the entry process early. Allow time for proofing by you or a colleague. Different people are likely to want to look at it and sign it off. It is advised to diary time ahead of the all important closing date of Monday 8 July. The more time you have the better!
  • Got a question?
We’re here to help so please ask us. If you have a question relating to your entry or the application process, then please email the Team: awards@socialenterprise.scot
